People are mixing coffee with popular condiment and it's proving divisive

People have been adding an unusual ingredient to their coffee

Coffee orders can be a very personal thing, especially today with all the various bells and whistles you can add on.

But there's one addition that some people reckon might be a step too far.

When you think of coffee tweaks, they most likely include whatever kind of milk you might fancy, and perhaps a bit of sugar or a flavoured syrup if you prefer things on the sweeter side.

But whether you prefer espresso, filter, or instant, one ingredient that people are adding to their coffee has left people shocked.

And no, it's not salt - though people have previously tried adding a pinch of that to their morning cup of joe to mellow out the bitterness a little.

Don't think solids with this ingredient, think liquids. Specifically, think oil.

That's because people have suggested adding a dash of sesame oil to coffee.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, condiment manufacturer Kadoya Seiyu wrote: "Coffee Day mornings are set with this! Milk coffee with pure sesame oil.

"A little addition transforms it into a fragrant, rich coffee."

It might sound unusual, but sesame does have a wide variety of applications, including as a delicious flavour of ice cream.

Given that, it's perhaps not impossible to imagine that it could work with a nice cup of coffee.

And it seems that after trying it out for themselves after spotting the suggestion online.

One wrote: "I just tried it... the aroma... Coffee infused with sesame oil has been born

"The taste is like milk coffee... but the aroma is sesame oil."

They added: "It kind of messes with your head I couldn’t quite figure out the richness."

Someone else said: "I tried adding it to coffee. The coffee's taste doesn't change much, and just a few drops are super good for your body - it's the best. It goes well with vanilla ice cream too!"

And yes, this is just the same sesame oil that you would use in cooking.

When another tried it though, they weren't quite so convinced.

They wrote: "I only added just a tiny bit, but it wasn't that it tasted bad or good; the fragrance was overwhelmingly strong.

"The taste was nothing special, just regular milk coffee!

"If you want to try the taste of sesame in your coffee but the idea of pouring oil in there is a bit much for you an alternative could be to use tahini."

Another simply asked: "Is today April 1st???"

Someone else added: "It's going viral, but there isn't a single voice in the replies or quotes saying 'it was delicious.'"

This paste is made up of ground sesame seeds and could also provide the toasty sesame flavour you want without being worried about an oily texture.

This is not the only time that people have decided to add an oil to their coffee.

Another unusual addition includes adding olive oil, which sounds like something you would need to be within dashing distance of a toilet to drink - and not because it made you feel sick...
