Greggs opens first ever pub with exclusive themed beers

From sausage rolls to pints, Greggs is stepping behind the bar for the very first time

Greggs is taking its legendary sausage rolls and bakes to a whole new level, and this time it’s pouring pints too. The bakery giant has teamed up with Fenwick to launch its first-ever pub, The Golden Flake Tavern.

"The Golden Flake Tavern brings a fresh twist to the traditional British pub experience, and we hope everyone who joined us before, along with many new faces, will come along to enjoy this unique Greggs experience," Hannah Squirrell, Customer Director at Greggs, said.

The pub, which opens on Saturday 27 September inside Fenwick’s Newcastle flagship store, is set in the heart of the city with views over Grey’s Monument, and is promising a classic British boozer feel with a Greggs twist. That means exclusive beers on tap, a line-up of comfort food made from Greggs favourites, and plenty of North East flavour running through the whole experience.

The star attraction behind the bar will be two brand new Greggs-inspired brews, created in collaboration with local legends Full Circle Brew Co. Beer lovers will be able to try the Pink Jammie Pale Ale and the Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager, both brewed specially for The Golden Flake Tavern.

And if you can’t get enough, they’ll also be sold in the Fenwick Food Hall, either in gift sets with a branded pint glass or as a six-pack.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Greggs without food that hits all the right comforting notes you know it for. The menu has been put together by Fenwick’s Executive Head Chef, Mark Reid, and reimagines pub classics with a signature Greggs makeover.

For instance, there’s the Chicken Bake Parmo with wedges and coleslaw, a Steak Bake Mixed Grill, and a Sausage Roll with creamy mash and onion gravy. There’s even a Ploughman’s Platter featuring a Cheese & Onion Bake and, naturally, a sausage roll. For dessert, diners can tuck into a Yum Yum Bread and Butter Pudding or a Pink Jammie Trifle.

Sundays are getting the full Greggs treatment too, with the pub serving a carvery where you pick your favourite bake - Steak Bake, Chicken Bake or Cheese & Onion Bake - as the centrepiece of a proper roast. Expect all the trimmings from crisp Yorkshire puddings to golden roast potatoes.

The Golden Flake Tavern isn’t just about the food and drink, either. The pub has been designed to feel warm, nostalgic and unmistakably Geordie, with a mahogany bar, cosy booths, artwork by local illustrator Mul Draws, and hand-painted signs from Ashley Willerton. There’ll be classic board games stashed in a cabinet for rainy days, and a cocktail menu inspired by Greggs for anyone fancying something different.

Talking more about the pub, Hannah Squirrell, Customer Director at Greggs, said: “Following the reaction and success of our previous collaborations with Fenwick—Bistro by Greggs in 2023 and the Greggs Champagne Bar last year—we’re thrilled to be launching our third landmark venture together."

Leo Fenwick, Strategic Partnerships Director at Fenwick, added: “We’re thrilled to once again join forces with Greggs to launch The Golden Flake Tavern at Fenwick. This latest collaboration celebrates the best of both brands, pairing Greggs’ much-loved classics with our own distinctive approach to creating memorable in-store experiences. As two North East icons, we’re proud to work together again in offering customers something playful, surprising, and truly unique in the heart of Newcastle.”

Bookings for The Golden Flake Tavern will open at the Fenwick website on Thursday 25 September, but walk-ins are welcome too. And if you’re competitive, quiz nights start on 7 October, running every Tuesday evening with prizes up for grabs.

For a great mix of beer, bakes and a full-on Geordie atmosphere, this will be definitely one pub that’s worth giving a try.
