Walkers confirms cult favourite crisps are gone for good

The crisps have been withdrawn leaving fans heartbroken

Walkers has confirmed that one of its cult favourite products has been discontinued, leaving fans gutted they can no longer get their favourite snack.

The company has had some unusual and controversial flavours over the years.

Whether it's tomato ketchup, marmite, or the almost equally love-it-or-hate-it prawn cocktail.

One brand of crisps owned by Walkers, while not so well known as others, managed to reach an almost cult status among fans.

Now, sadly, Walkers has confirmed that it will be discontinuing the brand.

It's Smith's Tomato Snaps, which have been hailed as 'top tier' snacks in some online rankings... IYKYK.

Despite that, PepsiCo - which owns Walkers - has said that it has made the sad decision to discontinue the line.

Fans will still be able to get the crisps for the next few weeks, with them being available both in stores and at wholesale level.

But once the stocks have all been sold, that's it - there will be no more Smith's Tomato Snaps after a run lasting since the 1980s.

A spokesperson for PepsiCo said: "Smith's Tomato Snaps have had a great run and will always hold a special place in our history, but evolving our portfolio allows us to focus on making more of the brands and flavours people love."

They added: "We know that fans of Snaps will be sad to see them go, and we'd like to thank them for giving the brand their support over the years."

Many took to social media to share their thoughts on the news.

"Please reconsider! I’ve introduced so many people to them and now we have to find a new favourite," wrote one person.

Another also urged the company to reconsider, writing: "Nope — not having that… spicy tomato Snaps are an alpha-league snack for me! Please reconsider."

A third person said: "Goodbye then, Tomato Snaps. Another of my faves going, joining the red Bounty, Topic, and Branigans ham and mustard crisps in snack heaven."

Smith's Tomato Snaps were previously made in Lincoln in the UK at the Walker's factory on Newark Road, with the factory first being built back in 1937.

Back then it was known as the Smith's Potato Crisp Factory, and has since switched over its production from Tomato Snaps to another hugely popular snack - Quavers.

Now every year, some 500 million packs of Quavers are made at the factory.
